9 year old Brisbane girl to shave head for cancer cure

[Update:  Alexandria Langford had her head shaved on Thursday 10th November 2011, raising over $12,500 for the Queensland Cancer Council, and touching many people's hearts throughout Brisbane and Queensland.  We thank the media and our local communities for their support and coverage for such a terrific cause.  Congratulations Ali... great effort].

Young St Aidans' girl, Alexandria Langford (Ali) from Chelmer plans to shave her head to raise over $4000 for kids with cancer this November in Brisbane. She will also donate her hair for a wig for Kids with Alopecia (Hair loss). ali_1

Alexandria is just 9 years old, and, recently influenced by a year 4 class in philanthropy and a death in the family caused by cancer decided she wanted to help kids with cancer.

She approached her parents and her school with her strong-willed request, developed a short business plan, and with their support now hopes to raise over $4000 for the Queensland Cancer Council by shaving her head in “Clip for a Cure”.

“It is unfair for kids to die young without getting to live their life and their dreams, and lose all the people that they love. The money that I raise might be the money that helps to find a cure”, said Ali when asked about why she is so keen to clip of her long golden hair.

The Langford family was recently touched by Cancer, with Alexandria’s cousins losing their mother to melanoma (skin cancer) at the young age of 39. Ali was particularly upset given that 3 young children have been left without a mum.

“I feel really lucky, that I don’t have cancer,..I couldn’t just leave it, I had to help,” said Ali.

“Even if it takes 10 years to find a cure  , I will still  be proud.. if I didn’t donate it may not have happened... I have helped.”

Alexandria will have her hair clipped by a Stefan Indooroopilly stylist who has been volunteered by the salon for the task. The school will honour her philanthropic efforts and invite the media to attend and share in the moment, at 1.30pm on 10th November 2011 at St Aidans’ Junior School Corinda.

Ali is the youngest of two children, with parents Scott and Kim. Her family is very proud of her caring nature and are providing plenty of support to her ambition.

“I feel proud and overwhelmed that  somebody so young has so much compassion and empathy,” said Kim Langford, Ali’s mum.

“Ali  is an amazing girl.. I am so proud, of what she is setting out to achieve, there is not thinking small with Ali,” said Scott Langford, Ali’s father.

“I am so proud of Ali, she is doing what she believes in....she is inspiring,” said Abi Langford, Ali’s 12 year old older sister.

Ali is asking for people to donate to the Cancer Council in support of her effort. The site can be found at:
